He worked his way through undergraduate engineering courses at the University of Portland by doing residential construction – framing, concrete, and finish work; graduating in 1994. Shortly thereafter he studied traditional timber-framed structures at the University of Wyoming where he obtained his master’s degree. In particular, he wrote his thesis on the tension capacity of mortise and tenon joinery. After this time, he went to work for a design / build custom timber-frame contractor and did the in-house engineering designs of the timber frames that they produced. He later worked for consulting engineering outfits in Washington and Wyoming, doing structural designs for all types of projects all over the US, and most recently worked for a design / build general contractor as the in-house engineer, plans preparer, project manager, site inspector, and as a site laborer. He has worked on residential, commercial, and open-pit coal mine projects (obtaining his MSHA Part 48 certification). |
